Over San Juan County
This page will provide updates from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island regarding flight and training schedules that may affect jet noise in the San Juan Islands. Please note that NASWI reserves the right to change its flight and training schedules at any time. The most recent notice is posted below.
WHY AM I HEARING JET NOISE WHEN NOTHING IS SCHEDULED? From the Navy: "People living in local communities should remain aware that the operations scheduled below (or not) are not the only operations out of NAS Whidbey Island, particularly at Ault Field, which is a 24-hour-a-day operational facility. There are many other training evolutions that people may hear. However, the aircraft carrier flight training operations are types of operations that involve lower altitude flight training in close vicinity to the airfield." FRANKLY, WE WONDER WHY WE EVEN BOTHER TO POST THESE SCHEDULES PUBLISHED BY THE NAVY; THEY RARELY CONFORM TO REALITY.
Please use San Juan County's Aircraft Noise Reporting Website to report jet noise that is bothering you. This data is analyzed frequently and reported to elected officials. Copies of those reports are available here.
March 11, 2026: Please read the March 5 announcement below, as well as this recent announcement from NASWI: "There will be training evolutions at the Seaplane Base Training Area on Monday March 16, and Friday March 20, 2026."
These training evolutions will involve limited explosive demolition training and simulated gunfire respectively.
All training operations will occur during daylight hours. Safety precautions will be set to ensure ground operations pose no threat to neighboring property or persons.
If you have questions or concerns, please call the Public Affairs Office at NAS Whidbey Island, (360) 257-2286.Please read the March 5 announcement (below)
March 5, 2026:
Announcement from NAVAL AIR STATION WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. – "The aircraft carrier-based flight training window announcement that is sent out each week is temporarily suspended due to ongoing global military operations and heightened operational security.
Navy authorities believe this is a prudent measure for the safety of its aircrew and the local community. This is not in response to a specific threat."
